Developing an Intelligent Mobile Clinic— A Medical Vehicle for Improve Access to Healthcare in Remote Areas: Evidence From China
ABSTRACT
The unequal of healthcare resource allocation is a public health issue of global concern. Lishui is a mountainous city in the southern part of Zhejiang Province, with a mountainous area accounting for 88.42% of the total urban area. Most of the residents in the mountainous areas left behind are elderly people, with low levels of intelligent medical literacy. Due to geographical limitations and the characteristics of residents, the accessibility of medical and health resources in the Lishui mountainous area is particularly prominent. The healthcare system of Lishui City has created an intelligent mobile clinic diagnosis and treatment model, which helps in combining the research results of remote medicine both at home and abroad of smart medicine in China. Intelligent mobile clinics are innovative in combining mobile hospitals with telehealth technology, providing a healthcare service model that combines online and offline services for residents in remote areas. Offline mobile medical vehicles regularly visit various mountainous villages every week to diagnose and treat residents, while accompanying medical personnel to assist residents with low levels of intelligent medical literacy in accessing online medical resources. This model effectively saves healthcare costs for mountainous residents, solves the issues of accessibility and fairness of medical resources in mountainous areas, and provides experience and reference for achieving equalization of medical resource allocation in remote and mountainous areas.
