ABSTRACT
Background:
The need for technology enabled self-management of Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) is gaining momentum. In this context, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) which is one of the leading NCD that requires constant check, medication and self-management practices (DSM) to keep T2DM under check. This study is proposing to develop a customized mHealth model that will be integrated with Hospital Information System (HIS) to enable real time transfer of information between patient’s module and doctor’s module which will be developed. The information saved on EHR will facilitate physician to have a chronological account of the patient’s diabetes history and this enables modification and tweaking of the treatment. This self-documentation practice is an integral part of diabetes treatment and the study expects positive outcomes like better adherence to DSM practices and better treatment outcome. The outcome of the study will be beneficial in developing similar mHealth models for management of NCDs.
Objective:
1. To develop an HIS integrated Electronic Diabetes Diary (EDDy) developed as per the end user expectations at a tertiary care hospital. 2. To evaluate and test the adherence to EDDy in the management of T2DM
Methods:
The study will be carried out in three phases, where the first phase involves in depth interview with primary end users to gather information regarding their expectations form a hospital based Electronic Diabetes Diary (EDDy). The second phase uses this information to develop a customized mHealth application using iterative model of software development. Third phase involves a pre-post-test where the developed application will be tested on the consented patient of the study setting where the clinician will receive the patient data through the HIS integrated mHealth application.
Results:
The pre and post-test values will be analysed for the adherence leading to improvement in their Self- Management of Blood Glucose (SMBG), user experience, glycaemic control and clinical Utility.
Conclusions:
Customized mHealth application can provide sufficient information for persons diagnosed with T2DM. This can lead to an effective intervention which will reduce the risk of person diagnosed with T2DM developing further disease complication like CKD, diabetic foot, retinopathies and peripheral neuropathies and thereby reduce cost of healthcare expenditure.
