Themes and Topics of Diversity Equity and Inclusion Publications in JMIR Dermatology
ABSTRACT
Background:
Publications concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are increasing. Given their relevance, here we present current literature regarding diversity in editorial boards, an analysis of publications in JMIR Dermatology, and propose a review aid for publications.
Objective:
The objective of this study was to summarize DEI literature, analyze DEI publication trends, and provide a review aid for publications.
Methods:
Data on JMIR Dermatology was obtained using artificial intelligence software and google scholar. A keyword approach was used to identify publications dealing with the terms and diseases of interest. "R" software was used for statistical analysis and figure creation.
Results:
From 2018-2023, JMIR dermatology increasingly published on the diseases of interest that included the keywords, ranging from nearly a third to a quarter of publications. Melanoma had the highest odds of a publication mentioning the target keyword, suggesting differences in research prioritization or funding.
Conclusions:
There is an increasing trend of publications within JMIR dermatology. Future publications can focus on expanding the keywords used, evaluating different diseases, and analyzing multiple medical journals.
