The Use of Social Media by Clinical Nurse Specialists at a Tertiary Hospital: A Mixed Method Study

ABSTRACT

Background:

Social Media became very popular among healthcare workers. Its` professional use varies in different health care sittings.

Objective:

To examine the motives, the barriers and the implementation of Social Media use among clinical nurse specialists in Oman.

Methods:

A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 47 Clinical Nurse Specialists at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital from November until December 2020. Data were collected by a questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS 21.0.

Results:

Forty-three (91.5%) Clinical Nurse Specialists responded to the questionnaire. All of the respondents were using social media applications. WhatsApp phone application was ranked the highest. Eighteen (41.9%) were spending 1-2 hours on social media application. The main motives to use social media were increasing knowledge, communication, reaching patients easily and reducing the number of hospital visits. Privacy concerns, time constraints, and an unawareness the legal grounds on the use of social media in work were reported as the main barriers. All of the participants requested the institution have a clear rules and regulation on the use of Social Media among health care providers in the future.

Conclusions:

Social media is a powerful institutional communication and health educational tool, but there are many obstacles that the Clinical Nurse Specialists along with the health institution have to improve to overcome those impediments.
