ABSTRACT

Background:

Poor academic performance in ADHD is partly related to challenging homework. Psycho-educative and school-based approaches are time consuming and not readily available for professionals. Digital tools, such as smartphone and tablet applications might be an interesting alternative.

Objective:

We present our digital program of accompaniment in homework for children and adolescents “Programme d’ Aide Numérique aux Devoirs pour Enfant avec TDA-H” (PANDAH) as well as the study protocol of our ongoing randomized controlled trial (NCT04857788) to test PANDAH efficacy on homework performance and family quality of life.

Methods:

Population: Individuals aged 9 to 16 years, with an ADHD diagnosis and no comorbid psychiatric disorders were included. Study design: The study will include (i) a 3 months period where participants will be divided into 2 groups (with or without the application), followed by, (ii) an extension period of 3 months where all subjects will access the application. The Primary endpoint will be the global Homework Performance Questionnaire (HPQ), Parent version score at 6 months. The study received a grant from the French Government (PHRC N 2019-0026). All personal data from the PANDAH Application are fully encrypted and anonymous.

Results:

Our work contributes to the digital transformation of healthcare. Use of smartphone applications in self-care and self-management is a societal phenomenon. Its implementation in the psychiatry field is of particular interest. Our application might be both an interesting accompaniment for patients and an opportunity for parents to take some distance from conflictual homework sessions.

Conclusions:

As the market for smartphone application in the field of healthcare and well-being is mostly driven by industry, it is crucial to have an academic conception and evaluation of such digital tools in medicine. Clinical Trial: NCT04857788
