Developing the next generation of Nursing disciplinary leaders in Higher Education: a sequential mixed methods protocol

ABSTRACT

Background:

Leading nurse education and research in the higher education (HE) sector has become increasingly challenging over the last decade with many universities in Australia and New Zealand having undergone academic restructure. As a result, the discipline of Nursing is at risk of losing its ‘standalone’ academic identity without strong, inspiring leaders.

Objective:

This research aims to identify an evidenced based set of core attributes that are exhibited by nurse leaders who have attained senior roles in the Australian and New Zealand HE sectors.

Methods:

This research is utilising a 3-phase sequential mixed method design incorporating a scoping review; Delphi and focus groups. In Phase One, a scoping review was undertaken to identify the barriers and enablers that can influence the evolution of the next generation of academic nurse leaders. In Phase Two, consultation with senior academic nurse leaders in Australia and New Zealand will establish a list of key qualities, behaviours and characteristics which are considered essential to academic nurse leader success. Using Delphi technique, key qualities, behaviours and characteristics of outstanding academic nurse leaders will be refined to develop an agreed set of core attributes which will be further informed and validated by emerging academic nurse leaders through focus group meetings in Phase Three.

Results:

Phase One of the research commenced in 2019 and was completed in 2021. Phase Two will be developed from findings of Phase One and is expected to commence in 2022. The refined set of core attributes will be validated in 2023. The anticipated completion date for the study is December 2024.

Conclusions:

Through the generation of an evidenced based set of core attributes, the findings of the study will assist to support and inform the next generation of academic nurse leaders including informing succession planning, job descriptions and postgraduate nurse leadership programs.
