Effects of music on ADHD symptomatology and potential application of music in video games: A systematic review

ABSTRACT

ADHD has a considerable impact on the subject's daily life. Some difficulties with timing deficits may be associated with deficient attention, poor reading, language skills and executive function. Music therapy has demonstrated its efficacy in symptomatology aspects in many disorders. Video games may prove to be a useful assessment and treatment tool to complement the difficulties of multimodal treatment in ADHD. This systematic review and proposal of music training program based on video games has been carried out following the methods of active, passive and interactive music therapy. We found no results for the three terms used simultaneously: (Music[MeSH Terms] AND Video Games[MeSH Terms] AND ADHD[Title/Abstract]. Therefore, the present review has two objectives: 1) To analyze the evidence of beneficial aspects of music in the symptomatology of ADHD through systematic review; 2) To propose the application of music in videogames following music therapy strategies. Of the 70 records identified, 13 were eligible in which music can be beneficial in different domains of ADHD. Furthermore, we analyzed some beneficial aspects of music that can be introduced in video game design. Literature has been reviewed considering timing and music therapy paradigms (active, passive, interactive). This review followed PRISMA guidelines. The study is registered in Institutional Repository of the Regional Ministry of Health of the Community of Madrid and PROSPERO (CRD42021288226), pending to approval.
