ABSTRACT

Background:

Pedigree data (family history) are indispensable for genetic studies and the assessment of individual disease susceptibility. With the popularity of genetic testing, pedigree data collection is more and more common. However, it is time-consuming, laborious, and even boring for clinicians to investigate all the pedigree data of every patient. A self-service robot instead of professional clinicians or genetic counselors inquiring about patients’ family history may be warranted.

Objective:

The aim of this study was to develop a mobile-based and self-service tool to collect and visualize pedigree data not only for professionals but also for those who know little about genetics.

Methods:

The user interface is built by the Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML), JavaScript libraries and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). The procession of the submitted data is carried out by PHP language. MySQL is used to document and manage the pedigree data in the text-based format.

Results:

iPed is a mobile-based and self-service tool that can be used whenever and wherever to collect and visualize the pedigree data. It is freely available at http://www.onethird-lab.com/iPed for all users. There is no need for installation of software, preparation of a pedigree file, and any knowledge about genetics or program. Just by answering some questions asked by iPed, the user can easily complete their pedigree data visualization themselves. Meanwhile, iPed stores users' family information. When the user wants to construct new pedigree trees about other genetic traits or change these pedigree trees have been developed, unnecessary duplication of operations can be avoided.

Conclusions:

iPed provides professional services for saving a great deal of time to collect, manage and visualize pedigree data.
