Epidemiology, secondary school curricula, and preparing the next generation for global citizenship

ABSTRACT
Because COVID-19 and other emerging infectious diseases are likely to play an increasingly important role in shaping American and global society in years to come, there is an imperative to include basic principles of epidemiology in secondary school curriculum. This could help provide future generations with the tools needed to navigate inevitable epidemics in coming years. It would also serve to introduce students to the field of public health, which might increase the supply of public health practitioners, a cadre that we have learned from COVID-19 must be increased in number. This viewpoint provides insight and ideas for ways in which this integration could occur in an interdisciplinary fashion, and makes the case how this effort would benefit population health.
