Technology-Based Interventions for Cancer Caregivers: A Concept Analysis
ABSTRACT
Background:
Caregivers of cancer patients often experience substantial physical and psychological burden. Interventions that incorporate eHealth components, such as technology-based interventions, have the potential to address caregiver burden effectively. A thorough analysis of how eHealth components integrate with caregiver interventions is a crucial step in understanding what factors contribute to intervention efficacy and caregiver wellbeing.
Objective:
This study aims to analyze and define the concept of technology-based interventions in the context of cancer caregiving.
Methods:
Walker and Avant’s eight-step concept analysis procedure was adopted to analyze the concept of technology-based intervention in cancer caregiving. PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Scopus were searched for literature directly addressing technology-based interventions.
Results:
The defining attributes of technology-based interventions are recognized as being accessible, affordable, convenient, and user-friendly. Throughout the literature, based on insights on defining attributes, technology-based interventions are broadly referred to as the use of technology to manage or support health promotion strategies that aim to produce accessible and affordable health solutions to a target audience.
Conclusions:
A clear conceptualization of technology-based interventions provides clarity on the foundational components of these interventions and the role of technology integration on research design and outcomes. This definition, in addition to insights attained from the literature surrounding defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, and model cases of the concept, could support researchers to better gauge the impact of intervention design on research outcomes.
