Assessing the effectiveness of policies relating to breastfeeding promotion, protection, and support in Southeast Asia: a mixed-method study

ABSTRACT
Design: Mixed methods (desk review, trend data analysis, quantitative and qualitative data collection).
Population:
In each of the 4 countries: we will conduct up to 24 in-depth interviews (IDI) with policy makers or authorities at national and provincial levels and stakeholders from the United Nations (UN), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), research organizations, and media; 12 employers or 12 health workers. In each country, we will survey approximately 930 women who are pregnant or with a child aged 0-11 months, of whom approximately 36 will be invited for an IDI. About 12 partners of the interviewed mothers or fathers of children from 0-11 months will be invited for an IDI.
Study Duration: 30 months from IRB approval to final report and dissemination of findings.
Primary To 1) review the content of national policies focusing on maternity protection and breast milk substitute (BMS) Codes and global standards; 2) review implementation strategies, coverage, monitoring, and enforcement of these policies across countries; 3) examine the potential impact of these policies on relevant outcomes; and 4) examine perceptions of these policies by relevant stakeholders and beneficiaries.
Study Sites: Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam
