How to preserve the open access benefits pioneered by JMIR two decades ago, and discourage predatory journals?
ABSTRACT
JMIR was a very early pioneer of open access online publishing, so two decades later some readers and authors may have forgotten the challenges of previous journal publishing models. This commentary summarises the many advantages of open access publishing for each of the main stakeholders and reminds us that, like every innovation, there are disadvantages we need to guard against, especially the problem of predatory journals. it concludes with suggestions for some simple measures to help preserve the balance of advantages of open access over its disadvantages.
