Disseminating the foundations of knowledge translation science and practice: A quantitative descriptive evaluation of reach and engagement of the KnowledgeNudge blog and Twitter profile
ABSTRACT
Background:
There is a documented need to build capacity for theory- and evidence-informed knowledge translation (KT). Dissemination of foundational content online, coupled with social media promotion, may build KT capacity by increasing awareness, knowledge and positive attitudes.
Objective:
This retrospective study sought to (i) describe reach and engagement of the KnowledgeNudge dissemination strategy (online blog and Twitter profile) over two years; and (ii) identify and compare characteristics of individual posts with the most and least reach and engagement.
Methods:
Blog reach and engagement were assessed by site visitors and views per month, respectively. Twitter reach and engagement were assessed by impressions and engagements, per Tweet per month, respectively. Descriptive statistics were calculated for six-month blocks, and compared using one-way ANOVA or t-test. Individual post reach and engagement were assessed by average views per week, and ratio of total post reads to views, respectively. High and low profile posts with the highest and lowest 10th percentile for reach and engagement were identified.
Results:
99 posts and 755 Tweets were published during the study period. There was a significant increase in Blog site reach and engagement (P<.001) and in Twitter reach (P=.004) during the final six-months. Seven high profile and six low profile posts were identified.
Conclusions:
The increases in KnowledgeNudge blog reach, engagement and Twitter reach suggest that the dissemination strategy increased awareness of KT foundational content. Variation in individual post reach and engagement warrants further exploration to tailor content to user needs. Future work will include a prospective evaluation strategy to explore the effect of KnowledgeNudge on knowledge, attitudes, and behavior.
