A Contextual Web-Scale Discovery approach to information retrieval: Improving Evidence Based Practice for healthcare practitioners
ABSTRACT
Background:
Practicing evidence-based healthcare is challenging due to overwhelming results presented to practitioners by Google-like Web-Scale Discovery (WSD) services that index millions of resources while retrieving information based on relevancy algorithms with limited consideration for user information need.
Objective:
Based on the user-oriented theory of information need and following design science principles, this study develops and evaluates an innovative contextual model for information retrieval from WSD services to improve evidence-based practice by healthcare practitioners.
Methods:
Problems from literature were identified to support real world requirements for this study. The Design Science Research Methodology was used to guide artefact design. Prototype of the context model was iteratively improved using artificial formative evaluation. Naturalistic summative evaluation using convergent interviewing of general practitioners was conducted to evaluate the model’s validity and utility.
Results:
The study iteratively designed and applied the context model to a Web-Scale Discovery Service to solve identified problems and sample general practitioners evaluated its instantiation in a real world setting to determine it had validity and utility.
Conclusions:
The context model for Web-Scale Discovery satisfied all requirements and evaluated successfully for information retreival to improve Evidence Based Practice. Outcomes from this study justify further research into the model.
