ABSTRACT

Background:

Heart failure is a public health issue projected to impact more than 8 million Americans by 2030. As the disease progresses, patients with heart failure rely heavily on family caregivers. However, the demand and intensity of caregiving tasks results in physical and psychological consequences for family caregivers.

Objective:

To describe a research protocol designed to evaluate the feasibility of a mixed-method study aiming to assess the emotional wellbeing of minoritized caregivers of patients with heart failure.

Methods:

Our pilot study follows a complementary mixed-method design incorporating photovoice, focus group (QUAL), and survey data (QUANT). The target population are unpaid caregivers identifying as Hispanic and/or Black and living in Inwood and East Harlem in New York City.

Results:

As of September 2025, we recruited seven caregivers. The recruitment process started in June 2025 and we project its completion by Spring 2026.

Conclusions:

This protocol describes a complementary mixed-method pilot study assessing the feasibility of a culturally-centered study evaluating the impact of care preparedness on caregivers’emotional well-being (benefit finding, thriving). The study findings will provide valuable knowledge regarding the feasibility and development of interventions for caregivers of patients with heart failure. Clinical Trial: Not applicable
