Uremic Pruritus: Pathogenesis and Therapeutics
ABSTRACT
Background:
Uremic pruritus (UP) is a refractory condition that affects many patients with chronic kidney disease.
Objective:
We present a systematic review of the RCTs performed to-date regarding the treatment of UP, assess them with the Jadad scoring system, and include only those with a score of ≥3.

Methods:
A literature search of the PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, and clincialtrials.gov databases was performed. Keywords included “uremic pruritus”, “uremic itch”, and “treatment”. Only full text RCT studies were included, and studies were assessed using the Jadad scoring system.
Results:
A diverse range of treatments have been studied in RCTs for UP, with only some showing improvement in pruritus greater than placebo.
Conclusions:
Further research into efficacious treatments is needed to confirm current research data, with a focus on creating a clear treatment algorithm for providers that balance efficacy with adverse effects.
