Known Group Validity of ScoScreen Application

ABSTRACT

Background:

Scoliosis is a common issue among most teenagers and children. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is defined as structural, lateral, and rotated spine curvature in adolescents. Scoliosis screening is primarily performed for early detection of spine deformity, usually performed in school. The recommended scoliosis screening instruments included a scoliometer and Adam forward bending test–however, conventional screening using a scoliometer required trained human resources, time, and cost. The evolution of healthcare and the rapid growth of mobile phone usage has given rise to a new form of mobile screening using mobile health (mHealth). Mobile applications available for scoliosis screening are mostly not validated and reliable. Hence, the ScoScreen application was designed to fulfill the lack of mobile instruments for scoliosis screening.

Objective:

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the known group validity of newly developed ScoScreen application.

Methods:

The known group validity was evaluated by comparing adolescents with and without AIS using independent T-test.

Results:

A total of sixty-two participants were enrolled in this study. The ScoScreen aplication differentiated significantly well in adolescents with and without AIS (Z = -6.68, p = 0.00). The average spine rotation among adolescents without AIS is approximately 3.16, which is lower than that of AIS patients.

Conclusions:

The findings of this study suggested that ScoScreen application has a good known group validity.
