Recent Progress and Research trend of Simulation Training: Bibliometric and Scientometric Analyses

ABSTRACT

Background:

Modern medical education promotes medical students clinical operating capacity rather than the mastery of theoretical knowledge. To accomplish this objective, simulation training is introduced into medical education to cultivate creativity and develop the practical ability of students.

Objective:

This investigation aimed to provide comprehensive insight into the evolution, hotspots, and development trends of simulation training.

Methods:

We searched the PubMed database for relevant papers published between 1964 and 2023. We used BibExcel, Vosviewer, and Pajek software to analyze and visualize the social network analysis of simulation training.

Results:

A total of 11,726 publications were collected. However, the number of papers published in the last three years has seriously declined: 821 in 2021, 447 in 2022, and 347 in 2023. The co-words "Clinical Competence", "Simulation Training", and "Simulation Training/methods" appear top 12 frequently both in the simulation training-related social network analysis and the simulation training-related growth trend analysis. From the simulation training-related growth trend analysis, we found that the period from 1964 to 2023 had the highest proportion (2%) of sustained growth trend co-words with more than 10 occurrences in the past five years, despite the lowest number of publications in 2023. The simulation training-related growth trend analysis also shows that five co-words related to the COVID-19 pandemic, "Virtual Reality", and "Computer Simulation" have shown rapid growth over the past five years.

Conclusions:

The findings of this study will assist researchers in improving their knowledge structure, identifying research hotspots, and revealing future directions in the simulation training field. Future research in simulation training should consider the hot topics of sustained high growth, such as the improvement of clinical competence and simulation training methods. Researchers should also consider emerging topics with great developmental potential and high growth rates, such as virtual reality and computer simulation in recent years.
