A COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF AMELOGLYPHIC PATTERN IN PRIMARY TEETH WITH AND WITHOUT DENTAL a
ABSTRACT
Amyloglyphic patterns are microscopic structures which are formed as a result of the arrangement of enamel rods that are present in the crown portion of the tooth. (Iorliam, 2018)This is a result of the formation of ameloblasts which makes the perikymata patterns unique in nature. When observed under Microscope these enamel rods run in a very different direction than the rest of the dentition and are person specific. Each individual amyloglyphic pattern is different from person to person. Vastly they are classified into eight distinct sub patterns observed in tooth prints such as Wavy-branched, linear branched, whorl- open, Loop, stem-like . Various techniques, such as the rubber base sensation, cellulose acetate peel technique and they may be used to investigate these patterns.(Ziemiecki, 1978) The disadvantages of these approaches are that the acetate peel technique requires the tooth to be etched and only provides a negative replica of the tooth surface pattern. These enamel rod end patterns have been found to be heat and acid resistant.(Todescan, 1984) The rationale of the study is to study the enamel rod end pattern on the primary tooth and establish a correlation between enamel rod pattern and caries formation. The null hypothesis states that stains and staining techniques cannot be used to study the relationship between caries and enamel rod end patterns. The aim of this study is to evaluate the various types of ameloglyphic patterns and to find out which type of patterns is more susceptible to caries formation in primary dentition 30 freshly extracted primary teeth were collected for the study from the Department of pedodontics. 15 teeth with caries and 15 teeth without caries To prevent prejudice related to different enamel characteristics of primary teeth, all of the teeth were collected regardless of gender . Depending on the availability, both male and female tooth samples were obtained. Then the collected tooth was cleaned first, and the buccal surface was chosen as the staining area as the enamel rods are almost perpendicular to the external surface of the tooth, Teeth with restorations other regressive changes such as, abrasion,attrition abrasion erosion, hypoplasia were not included in the study. The research included teeth with a fully intact buccal surface that were removed for carious or for orthodontic purposes. From the above samples taken the types of amyloglyphic pattern were categorized into four main types . They are linear pattern, whorl pattern, loop pattern, wavy pattern. Totally 11 teeth samples which show a wavy pattern are carious teeth.Decayed teeth with a wavy pattern showed the next highest number of incidence with total number of 5 teeth.
