Correlated structural brain variations in bipolar disorder: an association with cognitive function and clinical characteristics

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To explore the relationships among cortical thickness (CT) abnormalities, cognitive function, and clinical characteristics in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) subtypes.

Methods:

Fifty-seven individuals with BD I or BD II and 30 healthy controls (HCs) underwent 3.0T MRI scanning, and general linear model analysis using FreeSurfer was used to compare differences in CT between patients with BD I, BD II and HCs. Then we extracted the CT in morphological deficit regions and analyzed for relationships with cognitive and clinical characteristics.

Results:

Patients with BD I showed lower thickness in medial orbitofrontal region and greater thickness in parahippocampal region compared to BD II patients. Compared with HCs, the parahippocampal cortex was thinner in BD I, while the bankssts cortex was thicker and the parahippocampal gyrus was thinner in BD II. Immediate memory in BD I subjects was positively correlated with the CT of the parahippocampal cortex, CT in the bankssts and medial orbitofrontal regions was positively related to anxiety and depression, and psychotic symptoms in BD II were negatively associated with the medial orbitofrontal sulcus gyrus cortex. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that patients with BD I or BD II have significant CT deficits mainly located in the regions related to immediate memory and clinical characteristics.
