Increased risk of osteoporosis in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis: prospective and genetic risk score studies
ABSTRACT
Background:
Previous studies have shown an association between inflammatory diseases and bone metabolism.
Objective:
This study explores the relationship between chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and incident osteoporosis.
Methods:
We used multivariate Cox regression analysis to explore the association between CRS and the risk of osteoporosis at the individual level in a prospective cohort from the UK Biobank. We also calculated a poly-genetic risk score (PRS) of CRS using the genome sequencing data of UK Biobank participants and investigated the association between the PGS and the risk of osteoporosis.
Results:
The hazard ratios (HRs) for osteoporosis risk were 1.23 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.06 to 1.45), 1.22 (95% CI, 1.05 to 1.43), and 1.20 (95% CI, 1.03 to 1.40) in participants with CRS, respectively, after adjusting for individual characteristics, lifestyle factors, and comorbidities. In addition, we calculated the PRS of CRS for each participant. All participants were divided into low-, middle- and high-risk groups according to tertiles of the PRS. Compared with the low-risk group, the middle-risk group (HR 1.06; 95% CI, 1.00 to 1.10) and the high-risk group (HR 1.08; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.17) were associated with a significantly increased risk of osteoporosis.
Conclusions:
Patients with CRS are more likely to develop osteoporosis than those without. In addition, those with genetic susceptibility to CRS are all predisposed to higher risk of osteoporosis. These findings may help develop more personalized treatments for patients with CRS.
