Informatics Training is Essential for Clinical Professionals
ABSTRACT
Digital health informatics is quickly becoming a crucial component of training qualified clinicians. This opinion piece explores some current requirements for this training by various organizations in the United States. This paper focuses on three very important recommendations. The first of these is the currency of the training given the ever-increasing speed of technological innovation. Currency encompasses the key issue of faculty knowledge and skills. The second are the essential core competencies and entrustable professional activities that have historically been the focus of clinical training. Clinicians must learn to use digital and informatics tools to improve their delivery of care. The final and most important is the need for interprofessional education to ensure trainees understand how important all professions are to high-quality care.
