“Effects of multi-segmental exercise programme on postural dysfunction among geriatric population: Study Protocol of a Randomized Controlled Trial.
ABSTRACT
Background:
The efficacy of an exercise programme to improve postural dysfunction and balance among the geriatric population has not been extensively investigated.
Objective:
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a 24-week multi-systemic exercise programme to reduce older population postural dysfunction.
Methods:
This is a two armed parallel design double blinded, single centered randomized controlled trial based on the SPIRIT guidelines. One hundred and thirteen healthy geriatric population age 65-75 years will be enrolled in this study by convenience sampling. They will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to the intervention group (IG) and the control group (CG). The IG will participate in a multi-component exercise programme i.e. (strength training, endurance, balance, stretching and flexibility exercises). The CG group will receive postural education via a video. Global postural system will be used for the assessment of posture and balance. The main outcomes of the study will be posture, TUG test, Tragus to wall test and MiniBestest test.

Conclusions:
This trial will provide new evidence about the effectiveness of an individualized multi-segmental exercise programme to prevent the postural dysfunction and its associated adverse effects. Compared to usual care, the combined intervention is expected to show additive effects in the reduction of the balance and postural dysfunction among elderly. Clinical Trial: IRCT66236 25-10-2022.
