Classroom Cryotherapy: A Possible “Cool” Alternative or Complement to Traditional Mindfulness Techniques to Help Undergraduate Students’ Well-Being

ABSTRACT

There is a critical need for short-term, cost efficient, and effective mental health support for students on college campuses due to a surge of students with depression, anxiety, and overall stress. Because of this, many different mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) or mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) techniques have emerged that generally help promote well-being. Growing evidence supports cryotherapy, the therapeutic use of cold, having both physical and mental health benefits, but there is a significant lack of research that explores cryotherapy in a classroom setting, and if there is a connection to mindfulness. This quasi-experimental quantitative research design involved participants completing a pre- and post- test that measured their overall level of mindfulness after being assigned an experimental group that may or may not have had them hold an ice cube or complete a breathing exercise. Though there were no statistically significant differences between any of the experimental groups, further research is warranted to continue to explore cryotherapy as a possible resource-savvy, innovative complement or replacement for traditional MBSR techniques in a collegiate setting in order to help improve undergraduate student well-being.
