ABSTRACT
Background:
Nowadays, the use of applications in the self-management of chronic diseases is emphasized. Adherence to self-management behavior can be increased by personalizing the educational content provided in the application based on behavior change techniques. According to evidence-based reasons, the most effective behavior change techniques were selected in preparing the educational content of self-care applications, however, there was no questionnaire to screen patients when entering the field of self-care application studies.
Objective:
The purpose of this study was to design and validate a questionnaire for screening patients using self-management applications based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model(ELM).
Methods:
To create the desired questionnaire, studies on the approach of using behavior change techniques to motivate and increase patients' adherence were examined, and then the Patient Screening Questionnaire with the aim of Increasing Adherence (PSQ_IA) was developed based on the elaboration likelihood model. The questionnaire consisted of 32 specialized questions, in two descriptive sections (14 questions) and multiple choice (18 questions) based on a 5-point Likert scale. The validity of the questionnaire was evaluated by 3 experts in the field of medical education and reliability during a test-retest with an interval of three weeks.
Results:
There was no significant difference in the total scores of the questionnaire between the test and the retest (with an average of p=0.196). The distribution of the frequency of the main and subcategories between the test and the retest was in agreement (kappa coefficient 0.00 1). In this study, except for 2 cases, the CVI of the items was higher than 0.78, but because the CVR of all the items was higher than 0.79, the validity of the overall content of the questionnaire and its variables was confirmed.
Conclusions:
The screening questionnaire for chronic patients at the beginning of the self-care application studies based on the elaboration likelihood model had good and acceptable reliability and validity. This tool is recommended for screening patients in order to personalize the content of self-management training to increase adherence to treatment.
