Leveraging Telemedicine to Combat Antibiotic Resistance: A Comprehensive Review
ABSTRACT
Background:
Antibiotic resistance threatens global health security. Telemedicine, the use of telecommunications technology to provide remote clinical care, offers an approach to address this challenge
Objective:
This review examines the effectiveness of telemedicine interventions for antibiotic resistance, identifies barriers to implementation, and discusses future directions.
Methods:
A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar was conducted from January 2021 to June 2023. The search strategy included terms such as "antibiotic resistance", "telemedicine", "remote consultation", "patient monitoring", "infection control", "challenges" and "future directions". Relevant articles were identified, and data were extracted and synthesized.
Results:
Telemedicine interventions address antibiotic resistance by improving prescribing practices, promoting patient adherence, and enhancing infection control across three areas: remote consultation and decision support, patient monitoring and adherence, and infection prevention and control. However, several challenges limit implementation, including the digital divide, quality/safety concerns, and reimbursement/regulation issues.
Conclusions:
Telemedicine interventions offer a valuable approach to combat antibiotic resistance. To maximize the impact, further research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and investment in infrastructure are needed.
