Willingness of monkeypox vaccine and its correlates among men who have sex with men in Southern of China: a web-Based online cross-sectional study
ABSTRACT
Background:
The outbreak of monkeypox around the world in May 2022 is another health threat for who have sex with men (MSM), which accounts for almost all patients.
Objective:
This study aimed to describe the knowledge of Monkeypox, worries about monkeypox, their awareness of prevention strategies, willingness towards monkeypox vaccination and their correlates factors among MSM in China.

In this regard, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of MSM in southern China from August to September 2022. Multivariate logistic regression was used to explore the correlates willingness of monkeypox vaccination and its correlates.

Participants (N=1093) ranged in age from 18 to 70 years and mean age was 27.9 years. Over two-thirds 343(68.6%) had anal sex for one to five times in the past three months .999(91.4%) of participants were willing to receive a monkeypox vaccine and 639(89.4%) obtained information about monkeypox through the Internet. In multivariable analysis, considered the vaccine to be safe (aOR=6, 95%CI: 1.402–25.678), agreed that it was necessary for the government to promote smallpox/monkeypox vaccination in China (aOR=6.195, 95%CI: 1.038–36.993), agreed that smallpox/monkeypox vaccine should be given priority to MSM (aOR=8.88, 95% CI:1.742–45.274) and whose friends or sexual partners had received the monkeypox vaccination (aOR=14.305, 95%CI: 2.621–78.070) were more likely to be willing to receive monkeypox vaccine. Participants (729,66.7%) were aware that they were at a high risk of monkeypox infection and agree that vaccine should be given as a priority to MSM (661,60.5%). Those who were married (aOR=0.155, 95% CI: 0.039–0.614), had engaged in anal sex 4–6 times per week in the past three months (aOR=0.279, 95% CI: 0.089–0.875) and who received Jynneos (aOR=0.111, 95% CI: 0.013–0.922) were less likely to take the monkeypox vaccination.

There was a relatively high willingness of monkeypox vaccination among MSM in China. The hesitancy of monkeypox vaccination can be effectively addressed by eliminating concerns about the safety of the vaccine and adverse reactions to vaccination, and by increasing the acceptance of monkeypox vaccination of their peers among MSM. Clinical Trial: Ethical considerations The study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of Guangxi Medical University under protocol 20220132. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants prior to enrolment in the study.
