Warning: This is a unreviewed preprint (What is a preprint?). Readers are warned that the document has not been peer-reviewed by expert/patient reviewers or an academic editor, may contain misleading claims, and is likely to undergo changes before final publication, if accepted, or may have been rejected/withdrawn (a note "no longer under consideration" will appear above).

Peer review me: Readers with interest and expertise are encouraged to sign up as peer-reviewer, if the paper is within an open peer-review period (in this case, a "Peer Review Me" button to sign up as reviewer is displayed above). All preprints currently open for review are listed here. Outside of the formal open peer-review period we encourage you to tweet about the preprint.

Citation: Please cite this preprint only for review purposes or for grant applications and CVs (if you are the author).

Final version: If our system detects a final peer-reviewed "version of record" (VoR) published in any journal, a link to that VoR will appear below. Readers are then encourage to cite the VoR instead of this preprint.

Settings: If you are the author, you can login and change the preprint display settings, but the preprint URL/DOI is supposed to be stable and citable, so it should not be removed once posted.

Social network interventions for health behaviors and outcomes: health promotion and intervention to improve sleep quality

ABSTRACT

Background:

Using social networks in health promotion makes it possible to eliminate physical boundaries and minimize barriers to accessing support resources to improve health. This is a great alternative to promote the creation of support networks and encourage health promotion regardless of geographic location.

Objective:

In a pandemic-stricken world, more than 58% of people are dissatisfied with their sleep quality. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of social media interventions in changing sleep hygiene behavior.

Methods:

A one-group pretest-posttest design was used through a Facebook Group Community and under the modality of a ´9-week health challenge´. All subjects completed a Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire before and after the intervention, wrote a sleep diary, joined a WhatsApp group, and attended two live online presentations with a nutritionist and a neurologist.

Results:

Baseline PSQI ranged from 6 to 10 (55% of participants, mean=6.09), and after-intervention PSQI ranged from 1 to 5 (58% of participants, mean=4.47). The mean difference was statistically significant.

Conclusions:

The study showed a potential improvement in sleep quality through a 9-week social-media-based intervention.
