Measurements with Sensing Technology using 3D Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Diagnosis and Staging of Endometrial Cancer: Validation Study

Background:

In recent years, the morbidity of endometrial cancer has increased significantly. Early diagnosis and treatment have improved the survival rate of patients with endometrial cancer.

Objective:

The value of 3D ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging based on sensor technology for the diagnosis and staging of endometrial cancer was explored.

Methods:

Patients (n=31) with endometrial cancer who were admitted to our hospital from February 2016 to February 2018 and who were diagnosed with endometrial cancer were selected to participate. All patients underwent 3D ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for evaluation. The results of the joint examination were compared with the final pathological diagnosis, which was used as the gold standard, and the detection rate and coincidence rate were calculated for patient examination results.

Results:

The detection rates of 3D transvaginal ultrasound, MRI, and 3D transvaginal ultrasound in combination with MRI were 65% (20/31), 71% (22/31), and 97% (30/31), respectively. The differences in detection rates between the three methods were statistically significant (P=.006). The detection rate of 3D transvaginal ultrasound in combination with MRI was significantly higher than that of 3D transvaginal ultrasound alone (P=.02) and also significantly higher than that of MRI alone (P=.02). The coincidence rate of 3D transvaginal ultrasound in combination with MRI was higher than that of 3D transvaginal ultrasound alone or MRI alone for stage Ia (P=.03) and Ib (P=.02) endometrial cancer. The staging results of MRI were significantly different from those of 3D transvaginal ultrasound in combination with MRI (P=.03).

Conclusions:

Diagnosis and staging of 3D transvaginal ultrasound in combination with MRI for endometrial cancer is significantly better than diagnosis and staging of 3D transvaginal ultrasound or MRI single examinations, which could better guide clinical treatment.
